| the american west: a new interpretive history (the lamar series in western history)That book is great! It is one of the only history books that i find interesting! I recomend in to everyone that thinks history is boring because its not.
Great Overview...Tells a lot of the negative sides of The American WestThis is a great overview book of The American West...Chronologically speaking..and it has TONS of great pictures and maps!! I liked the way the adress the Un-PC issues..liek harming our environment or mistreating the Native Americans...This book really tells ALL sides of the story...The section on The Old West in books and films was great.....
i love this bookI thought this book was an excellent introduction to the American West. It is well laid out and definitely is a book worthy of a purchase.
Reductionist and dumb. Completely embarassing. This book represents a change in the way the American Indian experience is relayed to the student of American history (especially the experience of the north American Indians).
This kind of change is definitely welcomed. No longer are the American Indians relegated to the status of non participants and simple victims; many of them are shown as complex characters living in complex societies, such as the Iroquois Confederation, Tecumseh, Little Turtle, etc.
Sadly, the authors paint the Indians as innocent angels and almost all Europeans as primitive savages interested only in the destruction of the Natives. Some Europeans are praised for getting along with the Indians (William Penn for example), but most everyone else gets the shaft.
Not only do most Europeans get the shaft, so does much of the historical data which is often reduced to childish interpretations - at one point the authors like to pretend that the U.S. Constitution was based on an old Indian concept of unity while uttering nary a word about John Locke. In another spot the authors claims that the Northwest Ordinance has been called "rather extravagantly" a major political document by many political theorists but make no effort to prove their point, nor do they bother exploring the relationship between that document, the U.S. Constitution and the political structure of the United States. Add to this all sorts of condescending language describing the European conduct and you're left holding a book that's not even worth its weight in dung.
All of this would be laughable, except the book is published under a scholarly imprint.
Excellent overview! This is a great book if you want an overall synopsis of the history of the American West. While the author has a snarky comment here and there, overall I was beyond impressed with this book. It is a little more text book than straight read, but each section is manageable -- I learned a lot!
